Elizabeth Van Lew was a Union spy during the Civil War. She was a brave southerner who risked her life for others to be free. Born and raised in the heart of the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia, she was a privileged child, but what set her apart was her opinions on slavery. Unlike most southerners, she was a strong abolitionist who believed that slave power crushed freedom of speech. Read on to find out more about how Elizabeth will be remembered as a great Union spy during the Civil War forever.
