Elizabeth's Actions Against Slavery

Picture
As you already know from the previous reading, Elizabeth Van Lew strongly opposed slavery. Elizabeth and her family always treated their slaves with respect making it so the slaves' work was much more pleasureable than what most slaves experienced. When her father died, she and her mother freed their family slaves. Elizabeth was so nice and the slaves appreciated her so much, that most of them even wanted to stay as paid servants to continue helping out their family. When Elizabeth heard that the slaves she freed had children and reletives being sold by their owners, she spent $10,000 in her inheritance buying and freeing them herself! Elizabeth was a very thoughtful person who's actions effected the lives of many slaves.
